Denture FAQs 20

① Complete denture (no natural teeth) ② Partial denture (some teeth remain) ③ Implant Overdenture (secured with Dental Implants). The best option depends on your remaining teeth and jawbone condition.
For those aged 65 and older, Korean NHIS covers one set every 7 years, with an out-of-pocket co-pay of about 30% (about 400,000–500,000 KRW; approx. $292–$365). For eligible low-income beneficiaries, the co-pay is 15%.
It typically takes about 2~4 weeks. At first you may feel a foreign-body sensation, have speech difficulty, or experience gum soreness, but you will gradually adapt. Multiple adjustment visits will help achieve a comfortable fit.
After every meal, brush the denture under running water, and soak it in a denture cleanser while you sleep. Wearing dentures overnight strains the gums, so it’s better to remove them at night. We recommend using a dedicated denture cleanser 1~2 times per week.
As the jawbone resorbs over time, dentures can become loose. In such cases, a denture reline (resurfacing the inside rebase) or a remake may be needed. Don’t just endure it—visit the dentist for an adjustment.
It involves placing 2~4 Dental Implants in the gums and attaching the denture to them. It is much more stable than a conventional denture, improving chewing force and preventing dislodgement. This method greatly reduces the discomfort of regular dentures.
At Seoul BD Dental, we fabricate well-fitting dentures using precise impressions and bite analysis. A prosthodontic specialist provides direct care, and we offer ongoing adjustments and maintenance after delivery. Implant Overdenture is also available.
An upper (top) complete denture palate), so your sense of taste may decrease slightly. Most people adapt, though, and an Implant Overdenture does not cover the palate, so it has no effect on taste.
With conventional dentures, biting hard foods (apples, raw carrots, rib bones, etc.) can be difficult. Implant Overdentures have higher retention, so most people can eat comfortably. Start with soft foods at first and increase gradually.
We recommend removing your dentures during sleep. Your gums need time to rest, and sleeping with dentures increases the risk of gum inflammation, stomatitis), and fungal infection (candidiasis). Take them out and store them in water or a denture cleaning solution.
The most hygienic method is to combine mechanical brushing with a toothbrush and chemical cleaning with a cleanser. Cleansers remove invisible bacteria and odors. We recommend using them at least 2~3 times a week; over-the-counter denture cleansing tablets (Polident, etc.) are effective.
A complete denture typically takes 4~6 visits (3~5 weeks), and a partial denture about 3~4 visits (2~3 weeks). We proceed through precision impression, bite registration, try-in (trial fitting), and final delivery, with patient checks at each step.
Denture adhesive (e.g., Poligrip) can be used as a supplement, but relying on it heavily is not ideal. If you feel you must use adhesive, the fit of the denture may be the issue—please visit the dentist to consider a reline (rebase) or a remake.
When teeth are lost, the jawbone resorbs, the jaw shortens, and the lips collapse inward. Wearing dentures restores lost tooth and gum volume, helping your facial profile return to a natural look.
Pain occurs when the denture presses on the gums or a sharp edge irritates them. Don’t endure it—visit the dentist to have the inner surface adjusted (polished). Especially after a new denture is delivered, several adjustments within 1~2 weeks are common.
Speech may be unclear at first with new dentures. Most people adapt within 1~2 weeks; practicing by reading a newspaper or book aloud helps. The 's', 'ch', and 'f' sounds can be especially tricky initially.
Resin-base (acrylic) dentures are covered by Korean NHIS and are economical, while metal-base (cobalt-chrome) dentures are non-covered (out-of-pocket) but are thinner, lighter, and feel less bulky. With metal-base, you can sense food temperature better, so eating feels more natural.
Depending on your remaining teeth, options include extracting and making a complete denture, or using the remaining teeth for a partial denture. Placing 2~4 Dental Implants to retain an implant overdenture is also a good option. We’ll determine the best plan through a specialist consultation.
As jawbone resorbs over time and a denture loosens, a reline adds new material to the inner surface to restore the fit. It’s more cost-effective than a full remake and can usually be done in 1~2 visits. Typically, we check every 1~2 years to see if a reline is needed.
If possible, collect the broken pieces and visit the dentist. Many fractures can be repaired; severe damage may require a remake. When handling your denture, clean it over a sink filled with water to reduce the chance of breakage if it’s dropped.
