What is Roxolid SLActive?

Roxolid® is a high-performance alloy developed by Straumann specifically for dental implants, 85% titanium + 15% zirconium composition. Compared with pure titanium, it provides higher mechanical strength and excellent osseointegration ability. SLActive® is a chemically modified ultra-hydrophilic surface technology that achieves faster, more predictable osseointegration than conventional SLA.

Two core technologies in synergy

The perfect combination of material (Roxolid®) and surface (SLActive®)

Roxolid® — high-performance alloy

  • An alloy for dental implants composed of 85% titanium + 15% zirconium
  • Higher tensile strength than pure titanium (excellent mechanical strength)
  • Allows placement of narrow-diameter (2.9mm BLT) implants — maximizes bone preservation
  • Applicable to short-length (4mm SP Short) implants — minimizes bone grafting
  • Offers more treatment options and enables less invasive surgery
  • Validated by numerous clinical studies, including follow-ups of 5 years or longer

SLActive® — ultra-hydrophilic surface

  • Chemically modified SLA surface — achieves ultra-hydrophilicity (super-hydrophilic)
  • Immediately binds with blood to promote fibrin network formation
  • Accelerated osseointegration vs. conventional SLA — 6~8 weeks
  • Promotes osteoblast differentiation and attachment
  • Average bone loss of 0.5~1mm at 10 years — proven long-term stability
  • Excellent outcomes even in patients who received radiation therapy (Nelson K et al., 2016)

Why Roxolid SLActive is special

Material, surface, and clinical evidence—the three essentials are all outstanding

High mechanical strength

The Roxolid® alloy is stronger than pure titanium, delivering sufficient strength even at smaller diameters.

Minimum diameter 2.9mm

Can be placed even when the ridge is narrow. Preserves your natural bone as much as possible without grafting.

Ultra-hydrophilic surface

The SLActive® surface bonds with blood immediately, rapidly forming a fibrin network.

Most extensive clinical data

Over 40 years of clinical history and hundreds of publications—one of the largest evidence bases worldwide.

Low complication rate

Peri-implantitis incidence 1.8% over 10 years. Maintains stable implants long term.

Even challenging cases—OK

Shows excellent results in demanding cases such as patients with prior radiation therapy or immunosuppression.

Who is this recommendedfor

Cases where Straumann Roxolid SLActive is ideal

Those with narrow ridge width

The ultra-small 2.9mm diameter allows placement without bone grafting.

Those who want to minimize bone grafting

Thanks to the high strength of the Roxolid® alloy, even short 4mm implants are possible, reducing vertical bone grafting.

Those who want faster osseointegration

With the SLActive® surface, osseointegration is achieved within 6~8 weeks—about half the time of conventional surfaces (12~16 weeks).

Patients with systemic conditions

High success rates have been clinically demonstrated even in patients with diabetes, prior radiation therapy, or immunosuppression.

Those who want top-tier quality

40-year history, the most clinical papers worldwide, and a lifetime (conditional) warranty—ideal for those who value premium quality.

Those for whom long-term stability matters

Bone loss 0.5~1mm at 10 years; peri-implantitis 1.8%. The best choice if you want an implant that will last.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Straumann Roxolid SLActive

It’s not a simple 'good' or 'bad' comparison. Straumann’s strengths are its world-leading volume of clinical data and Roxolid® alloy technology, while Osstem’s strengths are a proven system with the world’s No. 1 market share and reasonable pricing. We guide you to the optimal choice after considering your bone quality, site, health status, and budget together.

Yes. The zirconium in Roxolid® is non-magnetic and does not affect MRI scanning. MRI exams are possible just as with standard titanium implants.

SLA (Sandblasted & Large-grit Acid-etched) is the basic surface that creates physical roughness, while SLActive adds a chemical modification to make the surface superhydrophilic. SLActive binds with blood immediately, rapidly forming a fibrin network and cutting the osseointegration period in half.

Straumann offers a conditional lifetime warranty. With regular checkups and maintenance, a lifetime warranty can apply to the implant fixture. This reflects Straumann’s confidence in its product quality.
